About Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are tiny plastic medical devices that correct vision errors. These devices are placed on the cornea and float on the tear film. Contact lenses are a great alternative to traditional eyeglasses and offer several benefits:

  • Contact lenses move with the eye and provide more natural vision correction.
  • Advanced
  • Well-fitting contact lenses stay in place on the eyes and improve peripheral (side) vision during sports and activities.
  • Contact lenses don’t fog up like glasses do.
  • Contact lens wearers can wear nonprescription sunglasses. Some contact lenses also provide extra UV protection.

They are extremely flexible, and can be worn when it best suits you. Some patients only wear contacts while playing sports or for special occasions, while others primarily wear contacts. The options are endless!

With the advancements in contact lens technology, there are more options and styles to suit various needs, lifestyles, and budgets than ever before.

Eye Exams for Contact Lenses

Because contact lenses sit directly on the eye, it’s imperative that they fit well and that you understand contact lens safety and hygiene. A contact lens consultation includes a comprehensive eye exam and fitting. The eye exam checks your overall eye health and determines your vision prescription, and the fitting takes your measurements and determines the best lens fit.

The Contact Lens Consultation

The consultation begins with a conversation about you. Your needs, lifestyle, health, and expectations. With so many styles of lenses available, contact lenses are comfortable, convenient, and accessible, so there are many options to suit your various needs.

Soft lenses come in daily and monthly disposables and extended wear lenses. Rigid gas-permeable lenses are more durable than soft lenses, and generally create a clearer, crisper vision. But, they’re not as initially comfortable as soft contacts and can take longer to get used to.

Some eye conditions, like astigmatism or dry eyes or presbyopia, may require specialty contact lenses. There are many options available that could provide you with optimal comfort and vision needs. We can help you discover the best option during your contact lens exam.

The Contact Lens Fitting

When it comes to contact lenses, there is no one solution for every eye. Your optometrist will take a series of measurements to properly fit your contact lenses.

Corneal Curvature

Keratometry measures the curvature of your cornea. We’ll use this tool to measure your corneal curvature to ensure the curve of the lens sits properly on the curve of your eye. In some cases, we may need to take a detailed map of your corneal surface using corneal topography.

These tools are noninvasive and generally comfortable for patients and give us invaluable insight into the health and shape of your cornea.

Using a biomicroscope (slit-lamp) or ruler, we’ll measure the horizontal and vertical diameters of your pupils and irises. These measurements will help us determine the best contact lens design for your, especially if you’re considering rigid gas-permeable lenses.

Because long-term contact lens use can cause dry eyes in some, a tear film evaluation will help us determine if your eyes have adequate tears to keep them hydrated and comfortable while wearing contact lenses.

Alternatively, if you have dry eyes, we’ll use the tear film evaluation to determine if contact lenses are a suitable option for you.

A tear film evaluation involves placing a drop of liquid dye on the surface of your eyes and viewing your tears with a slit-lamp or by placing a strip of paper under the eyelid to see how much tears are absorbed. If your tear film is weak, there may be a contact lens that can help your eyes retain moisture.

The Contact Lens Trial

During the lens fitting, you’ll be given a trial pair of contact lenses that suit your preferences. You will likely be asked to insert them at that moment so we can observe their fit and movement with your eyes. If they look like a good fit, your optometrist will send you home with the trial pair.

You will also be shown how to insert and remove your lenses and how to properly care for your new lenses.

Follow-up

You’ll be scheduled for a follow-up a couple of weeks after your initial appointment to check that your lenses are fitting properly, that your eyes are adjusting, and that you’re getting the clear, comfortable vision you need.

This is a great opportunity to let us know if you’re experiencing any discomfort or dryness so we can make some adjustments. Sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error to find the right contact lenses, but with so many options available, it’s likely the perfect lens exists for you!

Specialty Contact Lenses

Scleral lenses are larger-than-average contact lenses made of a rigid gas permeable material. These lenses vault over the cornea and rest on the whites of the eyes (the sclera).

For individuals with dry eye disease, standard contact lenses can be uncomfortable and may exacerbate symptoms. However, scleral lenses’ large shape provides a reservoir between the back of the eye’s lens and surface for fluid to collect and continually bathe the cornea, making them a comfortable choice for dry eyes.

Scleral lenses are also effective and comfortable for individuals with irregular corneas, like keratoconus. Their unique shape provides a smooth surface for light to refract through, creating a clear image.

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, are specialized rigid gas permeable lenses worn to improve symptoms of myopia. They are worn overnight while you sleep to flatten the cornea and improve vision temporarily. The lenses are removed during the day so you can see the effects.

Results from ortho-k lenses are temporary, so you have to continue wearing them to maintain clear vision. If you stop using them, your vision will return to normal.
