Developing a Strong Connection Between the Eyes & Brain

Do you know that there’s a difference between your vision and your eyesight? Eyesight refers to how well your eyes see and your visual acuity. Vision refers to the connection between the eyes and brain and the processes that control how we interpret and interact with visual information.

Vision is also related to our visual skills, which need to be learned just like any other skill. Well-developed visual skills are essential for learning, reading, writing, and interacting with the world.

Because 80% of learning is visual, strong, healthy eyes and well-developed visual skills will set your child up for success. But underdeveloped visual skills don’t have to hold your child back!

What Is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy is a customizable program designed to strengthen the connection between the brain and the eyes. Through a series of individualized activities and exercises, it aims to retrain the learned aspects of vision and improve visual skills.

Vision therapy isn’t only for children! Adults can also benefit from the program. Vision therapy for children can be effective in correcting common childhood vision problems like strabismus and amblyopia. Vision problems don’t go away on their own and require treatment. Children with vision problems become adults with vision problems.

Adults with vision problems may very well have been dealing with them their whole lives. But no matter how long you’ve been compensating for a vision problem, vision therapy can help you see more clearly, comfortably, and efficiently.

What Can Vision Therapy Help?

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

Amblyopia (lazy eye) is a vision problem that occurs when there’s a breakdown in how the brain and eyes work together. For some reason, the brain has difficulty recognizing information relayed from one eye and begins to ignore it. Over time, the brain starts to rely more on the other, stronger eye, causing vision to weaken in the ignored eye.

Amblyopia develops during childhood and is the most common cause of childhood vision loss. However, if this condition is caught early enough, treatments are often successful and prevent future vision problems.

Amblyopia Treatments

Amblyopia isn’t so much a problem with the weaker eye, but a problem with how both eyes work together (eye teaming). Vision therapy can work in tandem with traditional amblyopia treatments to improve the eyes’ binocular functions.

Strabismus (crossed eyes) is a muscle condition that causes a misalignment of the eyes. Strabismus most often affects children under 6 and usually appears between birth and 21 months. Children with strabismus may experience double vision, problems with depth perception, or may develop amblyopia.

Strabismus Treatments

Children will not outgrow strabismus. However, if detected early, strabismus treatments are generally successful. Treatments include personalized vision therapy, eyeglasses, prism therapy, and eye muscle surgery.

Convergence insufficiency is a neuro-visual condition where the eyes don’t work together when looking at nearby objects. It causes one eye to turn in or outwards, creating double vision.

Convergence insufficiency is usually diagnosed in school-aged children. Because it can create difficulties when reading, it could be misdiagnosed as a learning disorder.

Convergence Insufficiency Treatments

Recent research shows that in-office vision therapy is the most effective treatment for convergence insufficiency. Through a personalized treatment plan, vision therapy can improve eye coordination and reduce symptoms and discomfort when doing close work.
